Praying for wisdom to know God’s will, or to get guidance

A question believers often ask is, “How do you know God’s will?”. Many believers will tell you that they have never heard God speak in an audible voice, yet we know when He is guiding us. The Word is a light to our path and a window to God’s heart.

“If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask Him, and He will gladly tell you ……” James 1:5 ff.

Example of a prayer that an adult can pray
When you pray the prayer below, specify your need to God in the blank space provided, or simply pray from your heart:

“Lord God, you are the Father of wisdom. In wisdom you created the world and organized the progression of time and the seasons. You know everything and can change the course of the universe in a blink of an eye. In wisdom You created me. I exist for a reason. You know my past, my present and my future and you care about me.

Father, your Word says that if I lack wisdom, I should ask in faith, without doubting and you will answer me gladly. I need wisdom for ___________. Proverbs 16, verse 3, says we are to commit our work to you, LORD, and our plans will succeed. In Psalm 32, verse 8, you promised that you will guide us along the best pathway for our lives and advise us and watch over us. Father, I trust you with my future. Your timing is always perfect. Guide me in the best course I should take, advise me and watch over me, that I may know what to do. Be the center of my focus and help me make decisions that honor you, I pray, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Shorter version for adult to pray:

“LORD, I need help. I need your wisdom to know what to do about ________________. Please show me the way, I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen”.

Example of a prayer that a younger person can pray:
Where do you need God to help you make the right decision, or choice? Think about it. As you are praying, tell God about your need in the blank space below (you may also tell Him what you wish to happen, but be willing to let Him give you the best answer. He knows best):

“God, I trust you. You are faithful. Whatever you promised, you will do. LORD, you promised that if I need wisdom, I should ask you in faith and you will guide me to make the best choices for my life. Please help me understand what to do about ________________ in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
